The Hurva Synagogue in Jerusalem’s Jewish Quarter was rebuilt in the 21st century on the site of a historic synagogue; visitors come for its architecture, history and its location within the Old City’s heritage trail.
The Hurva Synagogue is a prominent synagogue in the Jewish Quarter of Jerusalem’s Old City that sits on a historic synagogue site known as the Hurva. The present structure is a 21st-century reconstruction of a building that had been repeatedly built and destroyed over the past three centuries.
Its interior features a large central prayer hall beneath a domed roof, and the building functions both as a house of worship and as a focal point for visitors to the Jewish Quarter. The site also has interpretive material relating to its layered history.
The original congregation established a synagogue on the site in the 18th century; a larger 19th-century building was destroyed during the 1948 conflict. The synagogue was reconstructed and formally reopened in 2010 following archaeological work and restoration.
