Hurrungane
Mountain Rugged Jotunheimen mountain massif popular with climbers
A rugged massif in Norway’s Jotunheimen containing several of the country’s highest, technical peaks. Mountaineers and hikers come for multi‑day routes, glacier travel and exposed alpine rock.
Hurrungane is a compact, rugged subrange within the Jotunheimen mountains, located in western Norway and renowned for steep, jagged peaks and technical alpine climbing. Many of its summits exceed 2,000 metres and attract climbers and experienced hikers.
The area offers rock ridges, narrow arêtes and steep faces; routes range from difficult scrambles to multi-pitch climbs and glacier-affected approaches in places. Mountain huts and small lodges at access points such as Turtagrø serve as bases for ascents, and popular routes include climbs on the higher peaks including Store Skagastølstind. Weather and route conditions can change rapidly, so the range is typically visited by parties with alpine experience.
Hurrungane’s peaks have been objectives for Norwegian mountaineers since the 19th century, and several classic routes were first climbed in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The area has since remained a core destination for alpine climbing in Norway.
Hurrungane lies in Jotunheimen within Vestland county and spans valleys that are commonly accessed from the village and mountain lodges near Turtagrø and nearby fjord-side communities.
