Huntly Castle
Castle Ruined medieval castle linked to the Gordon earls
Huntly Castle in Aberdeenshire is a ruined 12th-century stronghold later rebuilt by the Gordon family. Visitors explore towers and courtyards and read onsite information about clan history and restoration.
Huntly Castle is a ruined castle located on the edge of the town of Huntly in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, historically the stronghold of the Gordon family. The surviving masonry includes a tower house, palace ranges and curtain walls reflecting multiple phases of construction.
The site shows building phases from a medieval fortress through large 15th and 16th century domestic expansions by the Gordons. The castle later fell into ruin following conflict and deliberate slighting during the 17th century and subsequent centuries.
Today the ruins are managed and interpreted for visitors, with visible vaulted chambers, staircases and foundations that outline the former layout. The castle overlooks the town of Huntly and sits within agricultural lowlands of northeast Scotland.
Huntly Castle lies immediately adjacent to the modern town of Huntly in Aberdeenshire, roughly 60 kilometres northwest of Aberdeen, set in a landscape of rolling farmland.
- Association: The site is a ruined medieval castle associated with the Gordon family, historically the chiefs who became the Earls and later Marquesses of Huntly.
What to See #
- Tower house and keep: The tower house and curtain walls form the core medieval remains; these include a late medieval gatehouse and surviving sections of vaulted chambers that illustrate the castle's defensive layout.
- Palace ranges: Later palace ranges and domestic ranges added by the Gordon family in the 16th and early 17th centuries formed extensive residential and ceremonial spaces that now survive as ruins and stone foundations.
How to Get to Huntly Castle #

- Visit in the late afternoon for softer light on the stonework and generally fewer people than at midday, which is better for photos and lingering at viewpoints.
- Take a short walk down toward the River Deveron for a different angle on the ruin and to see how the castle sits in the town landscape - many visitors only view the main courtyard.
