Hungnam Travel Guide
City City in South Hamgyong, North Korea
A port on the East Sea, Hungnam offers industrial piers, a working harbour and nearby beaches; the rare visitor sees planned waterfronts, Soviet-era architecture and local fish markets under tight supervision.
Why Visit Hungnam? #
A major East Coast port and industrial hub whose coastal setting and wartime history attract visitors interested in modern Korean industrial life and 20th-century events. The waterfront and seafood markets give a sense of local maritime culture, while sites connected to the 1950s Hungnam evacuation draw people curious about Korean War history. Day trips to nearby beaches and factory areas reveal a side of the peninsula rarely seen by tourists, focused on work, trade and seafaring.
Who's Hungnam For?
Hungnam is primarily an industrial port area (chemical and fertilizer complexes and shipyards) serving North Korea’s east coast. For inbound trade or industrial contacts it’s significant, though foreign access is tightly controlled and usually limited to organized delegations.
The Hungnam/Hamhung coastline and nearby coastal hills offer rugged shoreline views and small bays. Scenic opportunities exist for boat trips and coastal walks, but visitor access is subject to heavy restrictions and must be arranged through official tours.
There’s potential for coastal hiking and sea views around the Hamhung-Hungnam area and nearby islands for experienced travelers on arranged excursions. Independent exploration isn’t feasible - any activity requires an authorised guide and careful planning.
For families on authorised group tours, Hungnam’s port and industrial sights can be educational about the country’s economy. Practical facilities for tourists are minimal, so family visits are only realistic as part of organised, guided itineraries.

How to Get to Hungnam
Hungnam (part of the greater Hamhung area) is primarily reached overland from Pyongyang or by coastal connections; there are no widely available international flights directly into Hungnam. The nearest international airports that travellers use are Pyongyang Sunan (FNJ) and, less commonly, Wonsan Kalma (WOS); onward travel is usually arranged through tour operators or official channels.
Pyongyang Sunan International Airport (FNJ): Pyongyang Sunan is the main international gateway to North Korea and the most commonly used airport for visitors to the Hamhung/Hungnam area. From Sunan you reach Hamhung/Hungnam by rail or road; overland journeys typically take most of a day (roughly 6-10 hours depending on connections and mode). Publicly published taxi or transfer fares are not available; most foreign visitors have onward transport arranged by their tour operator or embassy contact.
Wonsan Kalma International Airport (WOS): Wonsan is an alternative for some domestic flights and special charter services and is closer to the east coast than Pyongyang. Overland travel from Wonsan to Hamhung/Hungnam can take several hours by road (commonly half a day depending on stops and road conditions). Transfers and precise fares are not reliably published for independent travellers - arrange onward transport through the operator handling your entry into the country.
Train: Hamhung (Hamhŭng) is served by the national rail network; the city station is Hamhŭng Station on the east-west routes that link Pyongyang and major eastern cities. Trains are the standard way to travel long distances in North Korea; journeys from Pyongyang to Hamhŭng commonly occupy most of a day. Timetables and official ticket prices are not openly published for international travellers, and access/booking is usually managed through state agencies or tour organisers.
Bus: Intercity bus services operate between regional cities and towns, and there are local bus routes within Hamhung/Hungnam, but schedules, routes and fares are not reliably available to independent visitors. For practical travel, visitors typically use arranged coach transfers, state taxis or private vehicles organised by their host organisation rather than relying on published bus services.
How to Get Around Hungnam
Public transport information for Hungnam/Hamhŭng is limited for independent travellers; most foreigners rely on trains, organised coaches or hired cars arranged through tour operators or state contacts. For moving around locally, a combination of guided car transfers and walking is the most practical and reliable approach.
- Train - Intercity trains connect Hamhŭng with Pyongyang and other regional centres via the national rail network (Hamhŭng Station). Trains are slow by international standards and journeys take many hours; they are a practical option for longer distances if available. Timetables and ticketing for foreigners are typically handled by state agencies or tour operators, so independent planning is limited.
- State taxi / Hired car - Taxis and hired cars are commonly used for local travel and for transfers arranged by your hosts. For foreign visitors, private cars with drivers are usually arranged through the tour operator or local authorities; this is the most reliable and flexible way to get around. Expect prices and arrangements to be fixed through the organiser rather than metered public fares.
- Long-distance coach / Tour bus - Organised coaches are the standard method for group transfers between cities for foreign visitors and for internal tours. Coaches are predictable and convenient when provided by the tour operator, and they avoid the uncertainty of public schedule information. Independent intercity bus options exist but schedules and fares are not easily accessible to foreigners.
- Local buses - There are municipal bus services within Hamhung/Hungnam serving local passengers. Information on routes, times and fares is not reliably available to outside visitors, and signage may be in Korean only. If you need to use local buses, ask your guide to explain routes and boarding procedures.
- Bicycle - Bicycles are used locally by residents and can be practical for short trips along flatter streets near the port and residential districts. Availability for tourists is variable and typically depends on local arrangements; check with your host or tour operator before relying on a rental. Helmets and marked lanes are limited, so ride prudently.
- Walking - Walking is often the easiest way to explore central parts of Hungnam and the nearby Hamhung districts for short distances. Many points of interest and urban neighbourhoods are walkable, but amenities and signage for tourists are limited; travel with a guide if you are unfamiliar with local norms. Night-time walking options may be more restricted depending on your itinerary and host arrangements.
