Hungarian Parliament Building
Building Neo-Gothic riverside parliament building in Budapest
Along the Danube in Budapest, the Hungarian Parliament Building presents Neo-Gothic façades, a colonnaded riverside face and an ornate interior. Visitors book guided tours, photograph the façade from across the river and observe the Hungarian Crown Jewels replica.
The Hungarian Parliament Building is a large Neo-Gothic legislative building on the Pest bank of the Danube in Budapest, designed by Imre Steindl and completed in 1904. It houses Hungary’s National Assembly and is one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks.
The complex stretches about 268 m along the river, with a richly decorated façade and a central dome reaching 96 m in height. Interior highlights include the Dome Hall, grand staircase, and ceremonial display areas that hold national regalia. The building is open to visitors on guided tours and is especially notable when lit at night.
Built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries during Hungary’s Austro-Hungarian period, the structure was intended to represent national sovereignty and to accommodate the parliament’s legislative functions. It remains the seat of the National Assembly and a location for state ceremonies.
- Size, dates and room count: Completed in 1904 after construction from 1885, the Parliament building is about 268 m long and has a central dome rising to 96 m; it contains roughly 691 rooms.
- Viewing and tours: Best viewing points are across the Danube on the Buda side and at night when the façade is illuminated; public guided tours operate from the visitor entrance on Kossuth Lajos Square.

How to Get to Hungarian Parliament Building #
Take Budapest Metro M2 (red line) to Kossuth Lajos tér station and exit onto the square - the Hungarian Parliament Building fronts the plaza and is a 1-3 minute walk from the station. You can also take Tram 2 along the Danube and alight at Kossuth Lajos tér for an equally short walk.
By car the Parliament is in central Pest; from Deák Ferenc tér it is roughly 1.5-2 km (about a 5-10 minute drive depending on traffic).
Tips for Visiting Hungarian Parliament Building #
- Book a guided tour online well in advance and choose an early morning slot; tours are the only way to see the interior and morning tours are far less crowded than midday or late-afternoon river-cruise photo times.
- Enter from Kossuth Lajos tér and allow time for the security check-then cross the Danube afterward to photograph the full façade from the Buda riverside (near the Fisherman's Bastion) when light is best.
- If you want quieter views, wait until the last guided tour of the day ends and photograph details from the exterior balustrades; also check the Parliament website beforehand for closures due to state events.
