About Humberstone saltpeter works

The Humberstone saltpeter works is an abandoned nitrate (saltpeter) mining and processing complex in Chile’s Tarapacá Region that forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage site “Humberstone and Santa Laura Saltpeter Works.” It preserves industrial infrastructure and worker settlements associated with the late 19th and early 20th century nitrate industry.

Ruins include processing facilities, administrative buildings and rows of worker housing that together illustrate the scale of the nitrate economy and the company-town model of the era. The site documents the social and economic systems built around nitrate extraction and export, and its decline after the development of synthetic fertilizers led to abandonment.

The complex sits in the Atacama Desert inland from the northern Chilean coast near the city of Iquique and is visited for its industrial-heritage value and historic architecture. Conservation work and restricted access areas are in place to protect the fragile structures.
