Humberstone and Santa Laura Saltpeter Works
Historical Site Abandoned saltpeter works illustrating nitrate-era industrial heritage
Abandoned Atacama nitrate towns with industrial structures, worker housing and rusting machinery; guided walks and interpretation trace Chile’s 19th-20th-century saltpeter economy and social history.
The site comprises two former saltpeter (sodium nitrate) works in northern Chile’s Tarapacá Region, near the port of Iquique, that were established in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and are preserved as industrial ghost towns. It was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2005 for its testimony to the nitrate industry.
The complex includes processing plants, large machinery remains, storage halls, and rows of workers’ housing, along with administrative buildings, schools and recreational facilities. The ruined industrial structures and town layouts are accessible by foot with interpretive panels explaining production processes and daily life.
Visitors often explore both sites on the same trip to compare the different layouts and surviving equipment, and there are photographic vantage points that show the scale of the factories against the Atacama Desert backdrop.
Built and expanded by private nitrate companies during the boom in natural-saltpeter extraction, the towns supported large workforces who processed nitrate for fertilizer and explosives. The industry declined after the development of synthetic nitrate in the 20th century, leading to abandonment and later conservation efforts to stabilise and interpret the remains.
Situated in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile, the two works lie inland from the coastal city of Iquique in Tarapacá Region, presented to visitors as reachable day trips from the regional center.
- UNESCO status: Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2005 as an outstanding example of nitrate industry company towns and processing sites.
- Visitor tips: Located in the Atacama Desert climate - visit in the cooler hours and carry water and sun protection; many structures are fragile so follow marked paths and signage.
