Hulun Lake
Lake One of China's largest freshwater lakes in Inner Mongolia
Hulun Lake (Hulun Nur) in Inner Mongolia is one of the region’s large freshwater lakes, known for reedbeds, migratory birds and seasonal water-level changes; people visit for birdwatching, boat trips and nearby Mongolian-steppe pastoral landscapes.
Hulun Lake (Hulun Nur) is a large freshwater lake in northeastern Inner Mongolia, China, near the border with Russia. It is one of the region’s major inland lakes and an important wetland for birds and fisheries.
Shallow waters and extensive reed beds create habitat for waterfowl and migratory birds, and the shoreline is used for seasonal fishing and pastoral activities. The lake’s area and depth vary seasonally and with long-term climate patterns, producing extensive mudflats and shallow bays at times.
The lake has long been part of the traditional grazing and seasonal economy of Mongolian pastoralists and has been studied in recent decades for its ecological importance and changing hydrology. Modern conservation and water-management issues affect the lake and its surroundings.
Located in the Hulunbuir region of northeastern Inner Mongolia, the lake sits inland from the Russian border within a broad steppe and wetland landscape of northern China.
