Hull House
Museum Historic Chicago settlement house and social reform center
Founded by Jane Addams in Chicago’s Near West Side, Hull House began as a settlement serving immigrants; today’s museum and guided tours explore social reform, tenement life and progressive-era programs.
Hull House is a settlement house complex in Chicago’s Near West Side, founded in 1889 by Jane Addams and Ellen Gates Starr and long associated with social reform in the United States.
The site contains museum spaces with restored rooms, period furnishings and exhibits on settlement work and progressive-era social policy. Visitors can view domestic interiors, displays about outreach programs and interpretive material on the reformers who worked there.
Established in 1889 to serve recent immigrants, the settlement expanded from a single rowhouse into a cluster of buildings offering daycare, art classes, legal aid and other services. Over the 20th century the complex changed ownership and use and portions are now preserved and interpreted by the University of Illinois Chicago.
Located on Chicago’s Near West Side, just west of the Loop and adjacent to the University of Illinois Chicago campus, the complex sits in a historically working-class, immigrant neighborhood.
- Founding: Created in 1889 by reformers Jane Addams and Ellen Gates Starr to provide social, educational and artistic programs for immigrant communities.
- Historic status: Designated a National Historic Landmark and today interpreted by the University of Illinois Chicago.

How to Get to Hull House #
Hull‑House (Hull‑House Museum) is at 800 S. Halsted St. in Chicago’s Near West Side. The easiest public transit is the CTA Blue Line to UIC‑Halsted station, then a roughly 10-15 minute walk south on Halsted; CTA bus route #8 (Halsted) also serves the area.
By car it’s a short drive from the Loop (about 1-2 miles west); street parking and nearby paid lots are available but pay attention to local restrictions.
Tips for Visiting Hull House #
- The Hull‑House complex is now the Jane Addams Hull‑House Museum on the University of Illinois at Chicago campus-check the UIC museum website before you go for current opening times and any guided‑tour requirements.
- Plan your visit around guided tours or museum‑staff times: many visitors only see the exterior; the preserved settlement rooms and exhibits on social reform are small and easy to miss without a docent pointing them out.
- If you're combining this stop with nearby cultural sites, give yourself extra time to walk the Near West Side/UIC area rather than rushing straight to the next attraction-some of the best context comes from the onsite exhibits and archival displays.
Best Time to Visit Hull House #
Visit outside peak summer tourism (weekdays in spring or autumn) to see Hull House with fewer crowds while still enjoying comfortable weather.
