Main image

Huerquehue National Park is a protected area in Chile’s Araucanía Region that conserves Andean-Patagonian forest, volcanic landscapes, and a chain of glacial lakes. The park is known for marked hiking trails, waterfalls, and mountain viewpoints.

Visitors commonly follow the Los Lagos circuit and other trails to reach multiple highland lakes, forested valleys, and viewpoints overlooking the Andes. The park’s trails vary in length and difficulty, with boardwalks and stair sections in steeper areas.

The area was set aside for protection to conserve native forest and freshwater ecosystems and has been managed to support recreation and biodiversity conservation. Park infrastructure focuses on trail maintenance and visitor information rather than large built facilities.

The park sits in the Andean foothills of southern Chile’s Araucanía Region, within a landscape of volcanoes and mountain ranges; it is accessed from regional towns and is part of the wider network of national parks in southern Chile.

  • Trail safety: Trails range from short walks to multi-hour circuits; weather can change rapidly in the Andes foothills, so carry waterproofs and allow extra time for hikes.
  • Vegetation highlight: The park contains stands of evergreen temperate forest including mature araucaria (monkey puzzle) trees, which are a distinct botanical highlight.

What to See #

  • Los Lagos hiking circuit: The Los Lagos circuit is a network of trails linking a series of glacial lakes within the park, offering multi-hour hikes with boardwalks and marked viewpoints. This is the park's most-visited trail system.
  • Key lakes: Notable lake viewpoints include Laguna Verde and smaller tarns set within old-growth forest; these lakes sit at different elevations and are connected by marked trails.
