Hovgården
Archaeological Site Viking-era royal estate and archaeological site on Adelsö
Hovgården on Adelsö holds a royal estate and archaeological remains linked to Viking‑age Birka; visitors come for excavation sites, museum displays and Lake Mälaren’s island scenery.
Hovgården is an archaeological royal estate and grave field on the island of Adelsö in Lake Mälaren, part of the Birka and Hovgården UNESCO World Heritage Site. The site preserves the remains of a royal administrative centre connected to the nearby Viking trading town of Birka.
The estate developed in the Iron Age and became a centre of royal authority during the Viking Age, serving as a residence and meeting place for rulers who oversaw the nearby trading settlement of Birka. Archaeological remains and medieval continuity show the site’s long use as an elite centre.
Hovgården sits on Adelsö island in Lake Mälaren, roughly west of central Stockholm, with ferry and road connections to nearby towns and to the Birka site on Björkö.

- Adelsö island and historic landscape: Adelsö island village and surrounding agricultural landscape that preserves the historic setting of the estate and its relationship to Lake Mälaren.
Tips for Visiting Hovgården #
- Take the public boat or summer excursion that serves Björkö/Birka and plan to walk or cycle between Birka and Hovgården-these two adjacent UNESCO components are easiest experienced together on the same day.
- Visit outside the height of summer afternoons (early morning or weekday) to avoid coach groups and to enjoy the burial mounds and the hilltop viewpoint in relative quiet; the elevated site gives one of the best panoramic views over Lake Mälaren.
- Make time for the Birka Viking Museum and the short trails linking museum, Birka town and Hovgården-many visitors see only the museum or only the ruins, but the interpretation works best when you do both.
Best Time to Visit Hovgården #
Visit Hovgården in late spring through summer for the best access, milder weather and regular services; autumn is quieter and winter sees reduced access and colder conditions.
