Hovenweep National Monument protects a set of ancestral Puebloan masonry villages and distinctive stone towers on the Utah-Colorado border in the Four Corners region. The site preserves compact masonry structures placed on canyon rims, headlands and tributary drainages rather than a single large settlement.

The monument’s best-known features are multi-story towers and small clustered villages set alongside narrow canyons. Short trails and overlooks give access to the principal ruins; the Square Tower Group is the most visited concentration and contains several standing towers and rooms in close proximity. The ruins are compact and are typically explored on short walks rather than long backcountry routes.

Local ancestral Puebloan people built the masonry towers and houses between approximately the late 12th and 13th centuries CE. The clusters fell out of use before European contact and were later documented by antiquarians and protected by the U.S. government in the 20th century as archaeological resources.

The monument sits in rugged mesa-and-canyon country on the Utah-Colorado border in the Four Corners area of the American Southwest. Sites are dispersed along small canyons that drain toward the San Juan River; road access is via park roads and the nearest towns provide basic services.

  • Visitor facilities: A small visitor center provides orientation, maps and short interpretive trails; many ruins are viewable from trail overlooks rather than long hikes.

What to See #

  • Square Tower Group: The monument is organised into a series of small village clusters and canyon-side sites; the most accessible cluster is the **Square Tower Group**, a compact concentration of multi-story masonry towers and rooms reached by short trails from the visitor area.
