Main image

The House of Terror is a museum in Budapest documenting the crimes of Hungary’s fascist and communist regimes during the 20th century. It opened as a museum in the early 2000s in a building with a contested historical legacy.

Permanent exhibitions cover the Nazi-allied Arrow Cross era and the communist State Security apparatus, using archival material, recreated cells and multimedia displays. The museum presents testimony, documentary records and contextual exhibits about state violence and repression.

The building served during and after World War II as the local headquarters for Hungary’s wartime and later state security organizations. The museum was founded to present and interpret that history and the victims of political terror.

The museum is located on Andrássy Avenue in central Budapest, within walking distance of Oktogon and the city’s central boulevards.

  • Location: Housed in the building at Andrássy út 60, the museum occupies premises that were the Budapest headquarters of wartime and postwar security services.
