How to Get to Horlivka
Horlivka (Gorlivka) currently has no functioning commercial airport and regular national rail and bus services to the town are disrupted. The city lies in an area affected by the conflict and civilian access is restricted; reachability depends on the security situation and permissions from relevant authorities.
Kharkiv International Airport (HRK): There is no regular civilian air link that will take you direct into Horlivka. Kharkiv is one of the nearest functioning Ukrainian airports, but onward public transport into Horlivka is not available because Horlivka lies in an area with active and administratively changed frontlines; movement across checkpoints is restricted and subject to military and administrative controls. Travelers should not expect scheduled shuttle services, and any surface transfer would depend on special permissions and local arrangements.
Dnipropetrovsk / Dnipro International Airport (DNK): Dnipro is another regional airport used for access to parts of Donetsk Oblast; however, there are no reliable commercial onward services into Horlivka. Civilian access to Horlivka is controlled, and regular taxis, buses or rail connections that would normally link airports to the town are suspended or operating only under local / non-Ukrainian administration. If you must attempt travel, coordinate with local contacts or relevant authorities before arrival; exact fares and travel times cannot be provided reliably.
Train: Horlivka has a railway station (Горлівка / Horlivka) but regular Ukrainian Railways passenger services into the town have been suspended or severely disrupted since 2014 and the escalation of the conflict. Trains that once linked Horlivka with Donetsk and other regional centres either do not run or operate under non-standard conditions; ticketing, schedules and fares cannot be relied on for planning.
Bus: Before 2014 there were intercity buses and marshrutkas between Horlivka and surrounding cities (notably Donetsk). Currently, scheduled intercity bus services for outside passengers are inconsistent or unavailable because of checkpoints and administrative controls. Local bus or minibus services may operate inside the area under local authorities, but these are irregular and fares/timings are not published for external travellers.
How to Get Around Horlivka
Movement in and around Horlivka is heavily shaped by the security situation; routine public transport links to the rest of Ukraine are disrupted. If travel is necessary, the most realistic option is to arrange transport and permissions in advance with local contacts or authorities - private, locally arranged trips (where permitted) are generally more practical than relying on scheduled services.
- Private car / Driving - Driving is the most direct way to reach or move around the Horlivka area if you have permission to cross checkpoints. Expect routes to be redirected, delays at checkpoints and the possibility of military checks; carry identification and necessary permits. For foreigners, arranging travel via official channels or with local contacts is essential.
- Intercity bus / Coach - Intercity coach services that once connected Horlivka with Donetsk and other regional hubs are not consistently available for external passengers. Where they run, schedules and fares are subject to local control and can change without notice. Do not rely on published timetables; check with local operators or authorities on the ground.
- Train - The Horlivka railway station exists but regular passenger services are suspended or operated irregularly. Tickets, routes and safety conditions vary; Ukrainian Railways does not provide reliable timetables for services into occupied or front-line areas. Use rail only if you have up-to-date, local confirmation of a running service.
- Taxi / Local car hire - Local taxis or private drivers may operate within the area; fares are informal and negotiated locally. Taxis can be useful for short movements inside the town but crossing checkpoints or travelling between control lines with a taxi can be restricted. Always agree price and route in advance, and confirm the driver understands checkpoint procedures.
- Local buses / Marshrutkas - Local minibuses and buses may run on intra-town routes under local administration, often without published schedules. They can be useful for short trips inside Horlivka but information for outsiders is scarce and service reliability varies. Expect cash-only payment and possibly only local-language information.
- Walking - Walking is often the most reliable way to get around central parts of town for short distances. Take usual safety precautions, avoid unfamiliar areas near frontlines, and follow local advice about closed streets or curfews.
