Hopewell Rocks is a provincial park on the Bay of Fundy coast of New Brunswick, Canada, known for its tall sea stacks carved by extreme tides and for accessible low-tide beaches. The formations are commonly called the “flowerpot” rocks because of their narrow bases and vegetated tops.

The site offers boardwalks and viewing platforms above the shore and a beach trail that, at low tide, allows walking on the exposed ocean floor to the base of the stacks. At high tide the same area is flooded and popular for guided kayaking around the sea stacks.

The sea stacks were formed by marine erosion since the end of the last ice age as the powerful Bay of Fundy tides scoured softer rock and left harder sections standing. The provincial park protects the formations and provides interpretive information about the tidal and coastal processes.

Located on the Bay of Fundy coast near the community of Hopewell Cape in central New Brunswick, the park sits directly on the shoreline where the tidal currents are strong and the ocean floor becomes exposed at low tide.

  • Tide timing: Tide charts are essential because low-tide and high-tide experiences are very different; visitors should plan around published tide times and park guidance.
  • Visitor facilities: The park has a visitor centre and interpretive signage that explain the geology and ecology of the site and the Bay of Fundy tidal system.

What to See #

  • Boardwalks and lookouts: A network of boardwalks and viewing platforms above the shoreline that provide staged views of the sea stacks and tide flats, with easy-access trails to observation points.
  • Beach trail and sea stacks: Trail to the ocean floor that is open at low tide and allows up-close views of the carved sea stacks and tidal channels; access is only safe during the published low-tide window.
