Hopewell Culture National Historical Park protects a set of prehistoric earthworks and burial mounds built by the Hopewell culture in what is now Ohio. The park preserves geometric embankments, burial mounds, and associated archaeological deposits that document mound-building societies of the Middle Woodland period.

Interpretive trails, reconstructed mound outlines, and visitor information explain the layout and probable functions of the earthworks, including ceremonial and burial uses. The park comprises multiple disconnected units, each preserving distinctive embankments, enclosures, or mound groups.

Archaeological work in the 19th and 20th centuries documented artifacts and burial contexts from the Hopewell period, and federal protection established the sites to preserve them for research and public interpretation. Conservation focuses on protecting the earthworks, managing vegetation, and presenting findings to visitors.

The park’s units are located in southern Ohio near small towns and rural landscapes; several units are in and around the Chillicothe area and along river corridors where the Hopewell people built their earthworks.

  • Date and cultural context: Earthworks and mounds were constructed by the Hopewell culture between about 200 BCE and 500 CE and are part of a wider prehistoric network across the Ohio River valley.
