How to Get to Hopa
Hopa on Turkey's eastern Black Sea coast is mainly reached by road from Trabzon (TZX) or via Batumi (Georgia) if crossing the border. Dolmuş and intercity buses are the normal public transport - rail is not a practical option for most travellers.
Trabzon Airport (TZX): Trabzon is the nearest major Turkish airport (about 80-100 km west of Hopa). From TZX you can take Havaş or private shuttle services to Trabzon city and then a bus or dolmuş (shared minibus) to Hopa; total travel time is typically 2-3 hours depending on connections.
Batumi Airport (BUS - Georgia): Batumi airport in neighbouring Georgia is close to Hopa (roughly 40 km) and many travellers cross the Sarp border. From Batumi you can take a marshrutka or taxi to the Sarp border and onward to Hopa (border crossing times vary). Check visa/entry requirements before using Georgian connections.
Train: There is no direct long-distance passenger rail to Hopa; regional freight and limited services exist in the broader region but buses/dolmuş are the primary public option.
Bus / Dolmuş: Regular intercity buses and dolmuş run along the Black Sea coast connecting Trabzon, Rize, Artvin and Hopa. Buses arrive at Hopa Otogar (bus station) or central stops; travel times depend on origin (Trabzon ~2-3 hours, Batumi ~30-60 minutes excluding border time).
How to Get Around Hopa #
Hopa is compact along the Black Sea shore and easy to walk in the central area. It’s served by minibuses (dolmuş) and regional buses for travel toward Artvin, Borçka and the Georgian border; trains reach the wider region as well. Dolmuş rides are low-cost and frequent for short hops; taxis are available for door-to-door travel but cost more. If you plan to explore the surrounding mountains or cross-border points, a car gives the most flexibility.
