Cheung Chau is a small, densely settled island in Hong Kong’s Islands District with a long history as a fishing and trading community. It is well known within Hong Kong for its preserved village character, seafood stalls and traditional festivals.
The island offers sandy beaches, coastal walkways and compact village streets lined with seafood restaurants and small shops. Key draws include public beaches, traditional temples and the island’s famously vigorous community festival that features bun towers and parades.
Cheung Chau grew up as a fishing and boatbuilding center and retains many maritime customs and temple sites used by the local population. The island has adapted to tourism while continuing to serve a residential community.
Cheung Chau lies southwest of Hong Kong Island in the territorial waters of Hong Kong, administratively part of the Islands District. Ferries provide the routine connection to Central and to other outlying islands.
- Bun Festival: An annual community festival featuring bun towers and processions draws large crowds and is one of Hong Kong's best-known local celebrations.
- No regular cars: Vehicle traffic is heavily restricted on the island; transport is mostly by foot, bicycle or small licensed utility vehicles.
- Ferry access: Regular ferry services connect the island with Central (Hong Kong Island) and other outlying islands, offering routine day-trip access.
What to See #
- Tung Wan Beach: A sandy public beach on the island's east side that is the main swimming and sunbathing area during summer months.
- Pak Tai Temple: A historic waterfront temple dedicated to the sea god Pak Tai, located in the village and used in local ceremonies.
- Main Village and Pier: The pedestrianised main village area with seafood restaurants, small shops and the ferry pier where commuter and tourist ferries arrive.
