Main image

The Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh is the British monarch’s official residence in Scotland and a working royal palace in the city’s Old Town. The site originated as an Augustinian abbey and evolved into a royal residence with major construction phases in the 16th and later centuries.

Publicly accessible parts include the State Apartments, the Throne Room and exhibition spaces that present the palace’s history and the royal art collection when the palace is not in active use for official business. The ruined Holyrood Abbey lies immediately behind the palace and dates from the medieval monastic foundation.

Historically the palace has been associated with Scottish monarchy events and figures, including royal ceremonies in the early modern period and residence for monarchs visiting Edinburgh. Today it functions both as a museum-style historic house and as a venue for official state engagements.

The palace sits at the lower end of the Royal Mile, adjacent to Holyrood Park and at the foot of Arthur’s Seat, within walking distance of central Edinburgh’s Old Town and civic amenities.

  • Royal residence and visiting times: The Palace of Holyroodhouse is the official royal residence in Scotland and is open to the public when the sovereign is not in residence, typically during summer months.
  • Abbey and setting: The abbey ruins behind the palace are medieval and form a visible contrast with the later palace architecture; the palace sits at the foot of Holyrood Park and Arthur's Seat.

What to See #

  • Queen's Gallery / exhibitions: A small public gallery and exhibition space linked to the palace complex that displays changing exhibitions of royal collections and loans.

How to Get to Holyrood Palace #

Holyrood Palace sits at the foot of the Royal Mile in Edinburgh beside Holyrood Park and the Scottish Parliament. From Edinburgh Waverley railway station it is an easy walk east along the Royal Mile of roughly 15-20 minutes (about 1-1.5 km). The palace is also served by multiple Lothian Bus routes and is a short taxi ride from the city centre; the nearest tram stops (St Andrew Square / Princes Street area) are a similar walking distance away.

Tips for Visiting Holyrood Palace #

  • Book timed-entry tickets online and arrive at the palace right when it opens to beat coach and tour-group influx along the Royal Mile.
  • Enter from the Royal Mile/Abbey Strand approach and then loop into Holyrood Park afterward if you plan to do Arthur's Seat - doing the palace first avoids carrying backpacks up the hill during peak sightseeing hours.
  • Check the palace website before visiting: parts of Holyrood Palace (State Apartments/Throne Room) close for royal or state events, and the Queen's Gallery has a separate schedule that many visitors miss.
