The Holy Lavra of Saint Sabbas, commonly known as Mar Saba, is a historic Eastern Orthodox monastery in the Judean desert of the West Bank founded in 483 AD by Saint Sabbas the Sanctified. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited monastic communities in Christianity.
The monastery is built into steep cliffs above Wadi Qelt and contains a compact complex of chapels, cells and terraces stacked along the canyon wall. The main katholikon and the ancient monastic buildings are the visual highlights; the site is notable for its austere cliffside setting and narrow approach roads.
Founded in 483 by Saint Sabbas, the lavra became an important spiritual and cultural center in the Byzantine period and has remained an active Greek Orthodox monastery through successive centuries. The complex preserves medieval and later monastic architecture and has been maintained by the Orthodox community since its foundation.
Mar Saba sits in Wadi Qelt in the Judean desert, east of Jerusalem and Bethlehem, overlooking a deep valley that descends toward the Dead Sea. The site is reached by road from the Jerusalem area and lies in the West Bank.
- Access: This is an active Greek Orthodox monastery with limited visiting hours; check access rules before planning a visit.
- Visiting restriction: Women have historically been barred from entering the monastic enclosure; many visitors view the complex from across the valley.
