Holy Island, Firth of Clyde

Holy Island (often called Holy Isle) is a small island in the Firth of Clyde off the east coast of the Isle of Arran, Scotland. It contains archaeological remains and has been used for religious settlement since the early medieval period.

The island combines historical sites with protected natural habitats - seabird colonies, coastal heath and areas used by seals are notable. Recreational visitors walk the island’s tracks, visit the ruins, and use viewpoints along coastal paths.

Historic association of the island includes early Christian monastic activity linked to St. Molaise. In more recent decades parts of the island have been managed for conservation and retreat use while retaining priority for wildlife protection.

Holy Isle lies a short boat crossing from the village of Lamlash on Arran and is visible from the eastern shore of the island; it sits within the Firth of Clyde maritime landscape.
