Holt Castle

Holt Castle is a ruined medieval fortress on the banks of the River Dee near the village of Holt in north-east Wales. The surviving remains include earthworks, curtain wall fragments and sections of masonry that outline the castle’s original footprint.

Visitors can view the castle’s remains and earthworks from public paths along the river; limited masonry survives above ground but the site retains a clear defensive plan. Interpretive signage and local information explain the site’s medieval functions.

The castle was constructed in the late 13th century during the period of English castle-building in Wales and served as a defensive stronghold and administrative centre in subsequent medieval centuries. Over time it fell into disuse and partial ruin.

Holt Castle sits on a bend of the River Dee close to the England-Wales border, near the towns of Holt and Wrexham, and is visible from adjacent riverside trails.
