Hohentwiel is an extinct volcanic stump in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, crowned by the extensive ruins of a medieval fortress. The site overlooks the town of Singen and the surrounding Hegau region.

Visitors encounter substantial stone ruins spread over the summit and slopes, walking paths, and viewpoints that look over surrounding lakes and lowlands. The hill and ruins are a popular local hiking destination and are used for cultural events and guided tours.

A fortress was built and expanded on the volcanic hill during the medieval period and played roles in regional military and political history; it was later slighted and fell into ruin in the early 19th century. Ownership and use changed several times before the site became a preserved ruin and public attraction.

Rising above the town of Singen in the Hegau area of southern Baden-Württemberg, the Hohentwiel is a prominent local landmark visible from the surrounding countryside.

  • Overview: The Hohentwiel is an extinct volcanic cone topped by extensive medieval fortress ruins and offers panoramic views over the Hegau landscape.

How to Get to Hohentwiel #

From Singen (Hohentwiel) Hauptbahnhof (served by Deutsche Bahn regional and intercity trains) the Hohentwiel fortress sits on the hill above the town. It is an uphill walk of roughly 20-30 minutes (about 1.5-2 km) from the station to the ruins; a short taxi or local drive is also common if you prefer not to walk.

By car the site is reached via the roads into Singen; the nearest larger regional city is Konstanz (roughly 30-40 km away by road, around a 35-45 minute drive), from which you follow the roads into Singen and then up toward the Hohentwiel summit.

Tips for Visiting Hohentwiel #

  • Visit early in the morning (weekdays if possible) - the lower visitor numbers and clearer air at first light give the best panoramic views over the Hegau volcanic landscape and Lake Constance from the fortress summit.
  • Approach from Singen and follow the marked trail to the main ruin entrance to keep the walk shorter and access the visitor information panels; the route from the town is the most direct for first-time visitors.
  • Don't rush the circuit inside the ruins - many visitors miss the network of earthworks, prison ruins and explanatory plaques around the plateau that explain the fortress's long military history.
  • Avoid weekend crowding by taking the longer loop trail around the mountain rather than the busiest steep central path; the loop spreads visitors out and offers different lookout points.
