Hoffman Island
Island Man-made New York Harbor island, former quarantine station
A small artificial island in New York Harbor, Hoffman Island served as a quarantine and military site; today boat tours pass ruined structures and bird colonies.
Hoffman Island is an artificial island in Lower New York Bay, off the southern shore of Staten Island, created in the 1870s to serve as a quarantine station for incoming ships.
The island contains the remains of quarantine and support buildings and is of interest for maritime and medical-history contexts rather than as a developed visitor site. Boats and harbour cruises commonly pass nearby and offer views of the island’s ruined structures.
Hoffman Island was used as a quarantine facility in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and later served various military and civic functions during the 20th century. In recent decades it has been managed for wildlife, particularly seabirds, and is not generally open for public visitation.
The island lies in Lower New York Bay, a short distance off the south shore of Staten Island and near the smaller Swinburne Island; it is visible from ferry routes and harbour viewpoints.
