Hofburg, Innsbruck

The Hofburg in Innsbruck is a historic imperial palace that served as a Habsburg residence and administrative centre in Tyrol. The core complex dates to the late medieval period and was enlarged and remodelled through the 16th to 18th centuries, resulting in an architectural mix with prominent Baroque interiors.

Public rooms and state apartments within the palace display period decoration and were historically used for court functions and as the residence of Tyrolean governors and imperial representatives. The building now forms part of Innsbruck’s Old Town ensemble, alongside other Habsburg-era monuments.

The palace evolved from a medieval residence into a more formal court complex under Habsburg rule, with significant 18th-century redesigns that added ceremonial spaces and decorative programmes. It has since been preserved as a historic building with areas open to visitors.

The Hofburg stands in the historic centre of Innsbruck, Tyrol, close to the Inn River and within walking distance of the city’s main squares and the pedestrianised old town.
