Hoch Ducan
Mountain Alpine peak in Graubünden popular for hiking
An alpine peak in the canton of Grisons, Hoch Ducan draws hikers and climbers for its high-mountain routes, rocky ridges and panoramic views over the surrounding Alps.
The Hochschwab Mountains are a limestone mountain group in Styria, Austria, forming part of the Northern Limestone Alps. The highest point is the summit Hochschwab at 2,277 metres.
Hikers and climbers come for long ridge walks, steep limestone faces and an extensive network of alpine trails that cross pastures and high plateaus. The area is known for its karst landscape, with caves and seasonal springs that create distinctive scenery compared with the higher crystalline ranges.
Many routes lead to alpine huts and summit ridges; trails vary from well-marked day hikes to demanding alpine climbs that require route-finding and experience. The nearby Grüner See is a popular short-visit attraction for its clear water in the melt season and easy access from valley roads.
The Hochschwab massif is geologically a product of Mesozoic limestone uplift and subsequent karstification; human use has traditionally included summer grazing and alpine pasturing. Modern recreational use expanded with mapped trails and mountain huts in the 20th century.
The range lies in northern Styria in central-eastern Austria, north of the city of Graz and forming a transition between the Styrian lowlands and the higher Alpine chains to the west. Access points are reached from several towns and valley roads in the Styrian pre-Alps.
- Karst terrain: The range is composed largely of limestone and karst, so expect rocky plateaus, sinkholes and cave systems off main trails.
- Alpine conditions: Mountain weather can change rapidly; high-elevation routes often require alpine experience and standard mountain equipment outside the brief summer window.
What to See #
- Hochschwab (peak): The highest summit of the group, reaching 2,277 metres, and the focal point for most main ridge hikes and ascents in the range.
- Grüner See: A seasonal karst-fed mountain lake in the Hochschwab region known for unusually clear water in late spring and summer when snowmelt inflows are highest; it is a short drive from several trailheads into the range.
