HMS Belfast is a preserved Second World War-era Royal Navy light cruiser moored on the River Thames in central London. The ship is a museum vessel managed by the Imperial War Museums and interprets naval service from the 1930s through the Cold War.
Onboard routes take visitors through multiple decks including the bridge, operations rooms, engine spaces and gun turrets, with displays about life at sea, naval technology and the ship’s wartime operations. Exhibits explain the vessel’s role in Arctic convoys, the Battle of North Cape and the Normandy landings.
Built in Belfast by Harland and Wolff and launched in 1938, the cruiser served throughout the Second World War and remained in Royal Navy service into the postwar period before being preserved as a museum ship. The vessel has been adapted for public display while retaining much of its original structure.

How to Get to HMS Belfast #
HMS Belfast is moored on the north bank of the River Thames between London Bridge and Tower Bridge. The easiest public‑transport access is London Bridge station (Jubilee and Northern lines) - it’s a roughly 5-10 minute walk along the river from the station. Tower Hill station (Circle and District lines) is also within a 10-15 minute walk.
River services call at nearby piers (e.g., London Bridge City Pier) and there is street parking in the area, but central London congestion charging and limited kerbside space mean public transport is usually quickest.
Tips for Visiting HMS Belfast #
- Book tickets online with a timed entry to skip the on-site ticket queue and arrive early in the day when the ship is least crowded on the decks and in the narrow passageways.
- Start your visit on the upper decks (bridge and accommodation areas) and work downwards-the lower engine and boiler rooms get busier later and are harder to view when groups arrive.
- Allow extra time for the steep ladders and tight compartments; plan your route so you can visit key highlights (bridge, gunnery, engine spaces) before the mid-afternoon rush.
Best Time to Visit HMS Belfast #
Best on a dry weekday morning in spring or autumn to balance good deck views with lower crowds; weather affects comfort on exposed decks.
