Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park is a large protected game reserve in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, formed by the management of the Hluhluwe and iMfolozi areas as a single conservation estate. It is internationally recognised for its role in conserving southern white rhinoceros and for its diverse savanna wildlife.

The reserve offers a range of wildlife experiences including guided safaris, self-drive game viewing and walking trails; it is home to rhino, elephant, buffalo, lion and leopard among many other species. Terrain varies from rolling hills and river valleys to open grassland, creating a mix of habitats for game viewing.

The park lies inland in KwaZulu-Natal between the towns that give it its name and is managed as a single protected area; accommodation and ranger services are distributed across camps within the reserve.

  • Rhino conservation: The park has played a central role in white rhinoceros conservation and reintroduction programmes, and sightings of rhino remain a major reason visitors come.
  • Wildlife viewing: Game viewing is possible by guided safari, self-drive routes and walking trails, with the park supporting populations of the Big Five alongside many other species.

What to See #

  • Hluhluwe section: The Hluhluwe section is the older, northern part of the park and historically central to the park's early conservation efforts and rhino protection programmes.
  • iMfolozi section: The iMfolozi section encompasses rolling savanna and river valleys to the south; the combined area forms a single managed park with a variety of habitat types.
