Hjálparfoss
Waterfall Basalt-framed waterfall at river confluence in south Iceland
At the confluence of two rivers in southern Iceland, Hjálparfoss pours over basalt and volcanic rock into a wide pool; travellers stop for short hikes and to photograph the unusual columnar formations.
Hjálparfoss is a waterfall in southern Iceland known for its twin streams that fall into a rounded plunge pool framed by basalt columns. The falls are set in a scenic river valley and are a frequent stop on drives into the interior highlands.
A short walk from the roadside parking area brings visitors to riverside viewing platforms close to the falls. The site is compact and accessible on foot from the car park, making it an easy short visit combined with other attractions in the Þjórsárdalur valley.
The falls are formed where two rivers converge and drop into the same pool, producing the characteristic two-lobed appearance and columnar basalt scenery.
Hjálparfoss is located in the southern region of Iceland in the Þjórsárdalur valley, within reach of interior routes that run by the area; it lies inland from the southern lowlands and relatively near volcanic landscapes such as Hekla.
- Highlight: The waterfall is relatively short in height but notable for its basalt column surroundings and the pool formed where two streams meet; excellent views can be achieved from the riverside platforms.
- Access considerations: Access is via gravel roads that may be closed or difficult in winter; most visitors go in summer when highland roads are open and services are available.

- Confluence and plunge pool: The waterfall drops into a circular plunge pool framed by columnar basalt formations where two rivers join, creating the characteristic twin-stream appearance.
- Viewing paths and parking: Short marked paths and a parking area provide the main visitor access with close-range viewing platforms on the riverbank.
