Historic Villages of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama

The Historic Villages of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama are mountain settlements in central Japan noted for traditional wooden farmhouses constructed in the gassho-zukuri style, with steep thatched roofs. The villages preserve vernacular architecture adapted to heavy winter snowfall.

The villages developed over several centuries as agricultural communities; the gassho-zukuri construction technique evolved in response to climatic conditions and local materials, allowing storage and sericulture on upper levels of multi-storey farmhouses. Many houses date from the Edo period onward and have been maintained by village communities.

These settlements lie in mountainous areas of central Japan, with Shirakawa-go in Gifu Prefecture and Gokayama in Toyama Prefecture, set in narrow valleys roughly between the cities of Takayama and Kanazawa and accessible by regional roads and buses.

• Ogimachi (Shirakawa-go): Ogimachi village in Shirakawa-go contains the largest concentration of gassho-zukuri farmhouse clusters, set on terraced land and visible from an overlooking observation point.
• Ainokura and Suganuma (Gokayama): Ainokura and Suganuma in Gokayama are smaller settlements with well-preserved steeply thatched farmhouses demonstrating regional construction techniques adapted to heavy snow.
