The Historic Town of Grand-Bassam is a late 19th and early 20th century colonial town on the Gulf of Guinea that preserves French colonial architecture and urban layout. It was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List for its cultural testimony to early colonial urban and commercial life.

The town centre contains restored administrative buildings, commercial blocks and houses from the colonial era, together with a small museum and beach-front areas. The layout and surviving public buildings illustrate the town’s former role as a colonial administrative and commercial centre.

Grand-Bassam developed under French colonial administration in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and served as an important regional port and administrative centre during that period. Changes in administrative functions and transport routes reduced its prominence but left a well-preserved historic core.

Grand-Bassam lies on the Atlantic coast east of Abidjan in Comoé District and is readily reached by road from Ivory Coast’s largest city.

  • Visiting tips: The historic town is commonly visited as a day trip from Abidjan and is accessible by road; beaches and museums make it a popular short excursion destination.
