The Historic Town of Grand-Bassam is a late 19th and early 20th century colonial town on the Gulf of Guinea that preserves French colonial architecture and urban layout. It was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List for its cultural testimony to early colonial urban and commercial life.
The town centre contains restored administrative buildings, commercial blocks and houses from the colonial era, together with a small museum and beach-front areas. The layout and surviving public buildings illustrate the town’s former role as a colonial administrative and commercial centre.
Grand-Bassam developed under French colonial administration in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and served as an important regional port and administrative centre during that period. Changes in administrative functions and transport routes reduced its prominence but left a well-preserved historic core.
Grand-Bassam lies on the Atlantic coast east of Abidjan in Comoé District and is readily reached by road from Ivory Coast’s largest city.

How to Get to Historic Town of Grand-Bassam #
Drive & public transport: Grand-Bassam is a coastal town east of Abidjan and is commonly reached by road from Abidjan in around 30-60 minutes depending on traffic, a distance of roughly 30-45 km. Regular shared taxis/minibuses and private taxis depart Abidjan for Grand-Bassam from the city’s main bus and taxi terminals.
On arrival: the historic district is in the town itself and easily explored on foot from the main road and parking areas.

- Head to the Ancien Bassam (historic quarter) early in the day to explore colonial buildings, the national museum and the craft markets before tour groups and the midday heat arrive.
