Historic Site of Lyon

The Historic Site of Lyon is an urban complex in east-central France that illustrates nearly two millennia of urban development, from Roman ruins through medieval and Renaissance districts to classical 18th- and 19th-century urban planning. Its importance derives from its role as a commercial, artistic, and administrative center in southern Europe.

Lyon developed as a Roman colony in the 1st century BC and later became a medieval and Renaissance center for trade, banking, and later the silk industry. Over centuries the city grew along the riverbanks and hills, accumulating religious, civic, and commercial architecture that reflects its long economic and cultural significance.

The historic site occupies central Lyon in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, at the confluence of the Saône and Rhône rivers, approximately 470 kilometers southeast of Paris. The urban area spans both riverbanks and the Fourvière hill overlooking the city.
