Main image

The Historic City of Sucre is the constitutional capital of Bolivia and a well-preserved colonial city in the Chuquisaca Department. Its historic center dates to the 16th and 17th centuries and contains a concentrated ensemble of colonial architecture.

A compact urban fabric of whitewashed buildings, plazas and baroque and neoclassical churches defines the center. Key highlights include stately public buildings, small museums, and pedestrian plazas clustered within a few square kilometers, making the core easily walkable.

Founded in the mid-16th century under Spanish colonial rule, the city grew as an administrative and religious center for the surrounding region. Over centuries it retained much of its colonial street plan and monuments; it later became associated with Bolivian independence and republican institutions.

Sucre sits in a high intermontane valley of the Bolivian Andes in southern-central Bolivia, in Chuquisaca Department. It lies roughly 200-300 kilometers by road from larger cities such as Potosí and Cochabamba, and is surrounded by rolling Andean foothills.

  • Altitude: Sits at high elevation - the city is around 2,800 meters above sea level, so allow time to acclimatize if arriving from lowland areas.
  • Photography tip: Best light for photographing whitewashed facades and plazas is in the late afternoon when shadows accentuate colonial details.

What to See #

  • Casa de la Libertad: Houses the colonial-era government building where Bolivia's independence declarations were prepared and displayed; the building contains period rooms and exhibition space.
  • Recoleta Convent: A 17th-century Franciscan convent set on a hill with a museum and a vantage point overlooking the city; the complex includes cloisters and a botanical garden.
