The Historic City of Ahmedabad is the walled old core of Ahmedabad in Gujarat, India, established in the early 15th century by Sultan Ahmad Shah. The area preserves a dense fabric of mosques, gates and traditional residential quarters arranged within the old fortifications.
Prominent monuments include the Bhadra Fort, the large congregational Jama Masjid, and numerous pols - enclosed neighbourhoods of winding lanes and carved timber houses. The city fabric is notable for its blend of Islamic and local Gujarati building traditions.
Founded in 1411 by Sultan Ahmad Shah, the walled city grew rapidly as a regional mercantile and political centre, with successive rulers adding mosques, caravanserais and public baths. Many historic civic and religious buildings date from the 15th to 17th centuries and have been conserved within the urban core.
The historic centre occupies the west bank of the Sabarmati River within present-day Ahmedabad and remains a dense, walkable quarter distinct from the surrounding modern city.
