Historic Centre of Vienna

The Historic Centre of Vienna is the medieval and imperial core of Austria’s capital, encompassing the Innere Stadt with a concentration of Gothic, Baroque and 19th-century public buildings. The area includes major religious, civic and imperial monuments associated with Habsburg rule and the cultural life of the city.

Key components include St. Stephen’s Cathedral, the Hofburg imperial complex, and the Ringstrasse boulevard lined by 19th-century public buildings such as the State Opera and museums. The layering of medieval streets and later imperial avenues defines the character of the centre.

The centre developed as the political and cultural heart of the Habsburg monarchy over many centuries, with major phases of building in the medieval, Baroque and 19th-century periods. The Ringstrasse replaced the former city walls in the mid-19th century and concentrated new public institutions along a grand boulevard.
