Diamantina is a historic mining town in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, that developed during the 18th-century diamond rush. The town is noted for its well-preserved colonial urban fabric and vernacular architecture.

Streets are steep and often paved with stone, with compact rows of single- and two-storey houses featuring painted façades and tiled roofs. The town contains a concentration of colonial churches and civic buildings that illustrate mining-era urban development.

Diamantina grew in the 18th century around diamond extraction and associated commerce; its layout and many surviving buildings date from that period and from subsequent 19th-century occupation. The historic centre has been maintained with restorations that preserve original street patterns and building types.

The town lies inland in northern Minas Gerais on hilly terrain associated with Brazil’s ancient crystalline plateaus. It occupies a rural mining region rather than a coastal plain.

Diamantina is best reached by bus or a short regional flight to Diamantina Airport (QDV) from larger Minas Gerais hubs. From the city’s bus terminal, the historic centre is a short uphill walk; the streets are cobbled and steep in places.

• Take a walking tour that includes the diamond-shaped Praça do Mercado and the old goldsmiths' quarter to understand mining-era wealth distribution.
• Visit the Casa da Glória and the Cathedral for fine woodcarving and azulejo tiles often missed by casual visitors.
• Bring cash-some small shops and cafes in the historic centre accept only local currency.
