Historic Centre of the City of Pienza
Historical Site Renaissance town planned as ideal humanist city
In the Val d’Orcia, Pienza presents a planned Renaissance piazza-Piazza Pio II-and a compact cathedral. Visitors sample local pecorino cheese, walk harmonious Renaissance streets and take wide views across cypress-lined farmland.
Pienza is a small Renaissance hill town in Tuscany, Italy, redesigned as an ideal town in the mid 15th century. It is notable as one of the earliest examples of urban planning based on Renaissance principles.
The layout centers on a formal public square, with the Pienza Cathedral, the Piccolomini Palace and other civic buildings grouped tightly around it. Streets are short and aligned to frame views across the surrounding Val d’Orcia countryside. The compact scale makes the main sites walkable within a few minutes.
Commissioned by Enea Silvio Piccolomini after he became Pope Pius II, the town was rebuilt from about 1459 under architect Bernardo Rossellino to represent Renaissance ideals of proportion and harmony. The core ensemble of piazza, palace and cathedral dates to that 15th-century project and has been preserved with later repairs and restorations.
Pienza sits on a ridge in the Val d’Orcia in the province of Siena, between Montepulciano and Montalcino in rural Tuscany. The town overlooks gently rolling farmland and vineyards typical of the region.
- Best view: Offers clear panoramic views over the Val d'Orcia from the city walls and from viewpoints on the eastern edge of the town.
- Best time to photograph: Late afternoon light brings out the ochre stone of the façades and is a preferred time for photography around the central square.
What to See #
