Historic Centre of Telč
Historical Site Renaissance and Baroque town square with pastel facades
Telč’s Renaissance square arranges pastel gabled houses around a reflective pond, with a chateau overlooking the town. Tourists come for the ornate façades, Renaissance urban planning and highly photogenic streets.
The Historic Centre of Telč is a small Czech town centre in the Vysočina Region, renowned for its well-preserved Renaissance and Baroque houses arranged around a large rectangular market square. The town’s ensemble of façades, arcades and a château form a consistent historic streetscape.
The market square is bounded by a continuous row of gabled townhouses whose façades and arcades were largely rebuilt in Renaissance style from the 16th century onwards. The presence of ponds adjacent to the square creates reflective views of the facades and enhances the townscape.
Telč developed from a medieval settlement and was extensively rebuilt in the Renaissance period, when the principal façades and public buildings were constructed or remodelled. The château and municipal buildings illustrate the town’s growth and its architectural consolidation in the early modern period.
The historic centre sits in a rural part of southern Bohemia, on a gentle upland and around small ponds that form part of the town’s immediate landscape.
- Uniform Renaissance façades: The historic square is notable for the unified rows of gabled Renaissance houses and arcaded fronts that face the central pond, a distinctive ensemble of facades.
