Historic Centre of Prague
Historical Site Imperial city with gothic spires and historic bridges
Prague’s historic centre links Old Town Square and the Astronomical Clock with Charles Bridge and Prague Castle on the hill above. Visitors come for Gothic and Baroque architecture, classical music venues and atmospheric cobbled streets.
Historic Centre of Prague encompasses the medieval and early modern core of Prague on both banks of the Vltava River, including the castle complex, the Old Town and the Lesser Town. The area is rich in Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque monuments and urban spaces formed between the 9th and 18th centuries.
Major highlights include Prague Castle, the fortified hill complex with churches and palaces, the stone Charles Bridge built in the 14th century, and the Old Town Square with its medieval Astronomical Clock. The compact layout and preserved streets make the centre highly walkable.
The castle was established in the early medieval period and the city grew around royal and ecclesiastical institutions; successive building campaigns in the Gothic and Baroque eras shaped the present ensemble. Prague became a central political and cultural capital for Bohemia and later under Habsburg rule.
The historic centre lies in the modern city of Prague in central Bohemia, arranged on both banks of the Vltava River with the castle on a dominant hill west of the Old Town.
- Astronomical Clock: The Astronomical Clock on the Old Town Hall includes moving figures and has been in place since 1410, making it one of the oldest working clocks of its kind.
- Avoid peak crowds: Charles Bridge dates from the 14th century and is busiest at midday; early morning or late evening visits reduce crowds and improve views.
What to See #
- Prague Castle: A palace complex founded in the 9th century and expanded repeatedly; it contains churches, royal residences and state halls commanding the hill above the city.
- Charles Bridge: A stone bridge of medieval origin linking the castle quarter and the Old Town, lined with statues and carrying pedestrian traffic across the Vltava River.
- Old Town Square and Astronomical Clock: The medieval market and civic heart of the city featuring the Astronomical Clock on the town hall tower and a dense fabric of Gothic and Baroque buildings.
