Historic Centre of Camagüey

The Historic Centre of Camagüey is the historic core of Camagüey city in central-eastern Cuba, notable for a dense, irregular street pattern and a concentration of colonial-era architecture. The area preserves a network of small plazas, churches and merchant houses that developed from the 16th and 17th centuries onward.

Street layouts are intentionally convoluted and narrow, reflecting traditional urban responses to climate and defence; the centre contains public plazas that function as social and religious focal points. Architectural types include single- and double-storey houses with internal courtyards, plastered façades and decorative tile-work.

The city evolved as an inland administrative and agricultural centre during the colonial period; houses and public buildings were adapted over centuries, with some 18th and 19th-century refurbishments visible alongside earlier structures.

Camagüey’s historic centre lies in the interior of Camagüey Province, positioned away from Cuba’s northern and southern coasts; the district forms the core of the modern city and is surrounded by urban expansion.
