Historic Centre of Avignon: Papal Palace, Episcopal Ensemble and Avignon Bridge

The Historic Centre of Avignon comprises the 14th-century Papal Palace, the adjacent episcopal buildings and the nearby medieval bridge across the Rhône, all located in the city of Avignon in southern France. The site is notable for its concentration of high-medieval ecclesiastical and fortified architecture dating to the period when the popes resided in Avignon.

The Papal Palace dominates the city with massive stone walls, large ceremonial halls, chapels and fortified towers built during the Avignon Papacy in the early to mid-14th century. The Episcopal ensemble complements the palace complex and the partially surviving Pont Saint-Bénézet links the city to the river landscape.

The palace was constructed and expanded by successive papal administrations between 1309 and the late 14th century to serve as the residence and administrative centre for the popes who relocated from Rome. The bridge was originally built in the 12th century and later repaired; it suffered repeated damage over centuries and only fragments of the original structure remain.

Avignon lies on the left bank of the Rhône River in the Provence region of southern France. The historic centre occupies a raised area within the modern city and is immediately adjacent to the riverfront.
