Hirosaki Park

Hirosaki Park is a large municipal park in Hirosaki, Aomori Prefecture, Japan, built around a historic castle precinct. It is one of Japan’s best-known sites for cherry blossoms and castle-view hanami.

The park contains a multi-story castle keep and terraced fortifications set within moats, stone walls and landscaped grounds. Visitors come for the castle architecture, the moats and the large number of cherry trees-over 2,500 in the park-making it a major hanami destination.

The castle fortifications at the park date to the early 17th century when the Tsugaru clan established Hirosaki Castle; the surrounding grounds have been maintained and redeveloped over subsequent centuries as a castle park. The site combines historical structures with later park landscaping used for public recreation.

Hirosaki Park occupies a central position in the city of Hirosaki in Aomori Prefecture on Japan’s northern Honshu island, with the castle precinct set within the urban fabric and approached from nearby city streets.
