Hindmarsh Island Island

Hindmarsh Island is an island at the mouth of the Murray River in South Australia. It forms part of the lower Murray and Coorong coastal system and is adjacent to coastal lagoons and estuarine habitats.

The island contains rural land uses, residential areas and tourism-related activities such as boating and fishing on the river and nearby Coorong system. Its shoreline and waterways are used for recreational boating and angling.

Historically the island has been part of the Murray River’s lower estuarine system and regional transport and settlement patterns; more recent decades have seen development of holiday homes and local tourism. Infrastructure was added to improve road access and services.

Hindmarsh Island sits beside the town of Goolwa at the Murray River mouth, in the Coorong and Lakes Alexandrina and Albert region of South Australia, and is accessed by road from the Fleurieu Peninsula.
