Himera

Himera is the archaeological site of an ancient Greek city on Sicily’s northern coast, important in the Archaic and Classical periods. It is known for its urban remains and extensive necropoleis.

Founded in the archaic period as a Greek colony, Himera grew into a regional centre and was involved in conflicts between Greek cities and Carthaginian forces. The city was sacked and destroyed by Carthaginian armies in 409 BC; later occupations left traces but the classical city did not recover its former status.

Located on Sicily’s northern shore near the modern coastline, the archaeological area is reached from nearby towns on the Palermo-Agrigento corridor and lies within the coastal plain where the ancient city once stood.
