Himera
Archaeological Site Ancient Greek city ruins and archaeological site
On Sicily’s northern coast, Himera’s archaeological park contains remains of a Greek city, necropoleis and coastal views; visitors study excavated foundations and artifacts from the city’s Classical period.
Himera is the archaeological site of an ancient Greek city on Sicily’s northern coast, important in the Archaic and Classical periods. It is known for its urban remains and extensive necropoleis.
Founded in the archaic period as a Greek colony, Himera grew into a regional centre and was involved in conflicts between Greek cities and Carthaginian forces. The city was sacked and destroyed by Carthaginian armies in 409 BC; later occupations left traces but the classical city did not recover its former status.
Located on Sicily’s northern shore near the modern coastline, the archaeological area is reached from nearby towns on the Palermo-Agrigento corridor and lies within the coastal plain where the ancient city once stood.
- Destruction in 409 BC: The city was an important Greek colony in northern Sicily and was destroyed by Carthaginian forces at the end of the 5th century BC, leaving a clear archaeological horizon.
- Excavated remains: Excavations have revealed city walls, public buildings and burial grounds that document its Greek urban phase and subsequent events.
What to See #
- Acropolis and urban area: Acropolis and urban remains include foundation walls and street traces of the ancient settlement, visible across the hilltop and giving a sense of the city's former plan.
- Necropoleis and burial zones: Necropoleis and burial areas contain tombs and funerary remains uncovered by excavations, providing the principal source of grave goods and dating evidence for the site.
How to Get to Himera #
Himera is reachable from major Sicilian towns by car; it lies near the modern town of Termini Imerese and is typically visited by drivers touring the northern coast. Public transit options are limited; plan on a taxi or organized tour for direct access.
