Hildesheim Cathedral (St. Mary’s Cathedral) is the medieval cathedral in Hildesheim, Lower Saxony, notable for its Romanesque and Ottonian-era art and fittings, including the Bernward Doors and early medieval metalwork.
The building has origins in the early medieval period and was developed and rebuilt across the 11th and 12th centuries; much of its historical fabric and furnishings date from that era. The cathedral suffered heavy damage in World War II and was subsequently reconstructed and restored to preserve its medieval appearance and contents.
The site’s important medieval artworks and architecture led to its joint inscription with St. Michael’s Church as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for outstanding examples of early medieval church design and liturgical art.
The cathedral stands in the historic centre of Hildesheim, a city in Lower Saxony approximately 30 kilometres southeast of Hanover, and is a focal point of the town’s cultural and religious heritage.
- UNESCO World Heritage listing: Hildesheim Cathedral and the nearby Church of St. Michael were inscribed together as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for their outstanding medieval architecture and surviving medieval fittings.
What to See #
- Bernward Doors: The Bernward Doors, a pair of monumental bronze doors dating to the early 11th century that depict Biblical scenes in relief and are historically linked to Bishop Bernward.
- Cathedral treasury and crypt: The cathedral treasury and crypt, which hold medieval liturgical metalwork and relic-related objects dating from the 11th and 12th centuries.
