Hilandar
Religious Site Serbian Orthodox monastery on Mount Athos peninsula
A Serbian Orthodox monastery on Mount Athos founded around 1198, Hilandar preserves Byzantine churches, frescoes, and manuscript collections. Visits require the Mount Athos permit and are limited to male pilgrims; the site draws visitors for religious art and liturgy.
Hilandar is a Serbian Orthodox monastery on the monastic peninsula of Mount Athos in northern Greece, established at the end of the 12th century. It is one of the twenty ruling monasteries of the Athonite community and serves as a spiritual and cultural centre for Serbian Orthodoxy.
The monastery was founded by Saint Sava and his father Stefan Nemanja and developed over the medieval period into a major monastic complex. Its library and treasury contain significant medieval manuscripts, liturgical objects and icons important to Serbian ecclesiastical history.
Hilandar functions within the autonomous monastic state of Mount Athos, which has special administrative status and strict access rules; only male pilgrims and visitors with the required permits may enter the peninsula. The monastery continues to operate as a living monastic community under the Athonite tradition.
Hilandar is located on the eastern side of the Mount Athos peninsula overlooking the Aegean Sea, within the self-governing monastic state that is approached by boat from the mainland port of Ouranoupoli or from regional ports in northern Greece.
- Foundation and holdings: Founded around the end of the 12th century by the Serbian prince Sava and his father Stefan Nemanja, it remains the principal Serbian monastery on Mount Athos and houses important medieval manuscripts and icons.
How to Get to Hilandar #
Hilandar monastery is on the Mount Athos peninsula and can only be visited under the Athos permit system (a special entry permit is required and access is restricted to men). The usual embarkation point is Ouranoupolis (Halkidiki); from there take the public ferry to Dafni (the main Mount Athos harbor) and then a short boat transfer or coastal hike to the monastery. Most visitors reach Ouranoupolis by road (from Thessaloniki by car or bus in a few hours) before boarding the ferry; check monastery admission rules and ferry timetables in advance.
Tips for Visiting Hilandar #
- Obtain the necessary Mount Athos permit (diamonitirion) well ahead of travel: access to Hilandar and the Athos peninsula is strictly controlled, limited, and only issued through the Pilgrims' Bureau - you must be male to visit.
- Plan your approach via Ouranoupoli (main embarkation point) and ferry to Dafni; schedule ferry times and monastery accommodation in advance because guest spaces at Hilandar are limited and the monastery manages visitor logistics.
- Bring passport and the printed permit, and confirm any specific arrival instructions with Hilandar beforehand - monasteries set their own visiting rules and schedules, so pre-arranged arrival times avoid long waits or refused entry.
Best Time to Visit Hilandar #
