How to Get to Hikawa Shrine #

Hikawa Shrine (Ōmiya, Saitama) is best reached from JR Ōmiya Station, which is served by multiple JR lines including the Tōhoku (Utsunomiya) Line, Takasaki Line, Keihin-Tōhoku Line and Shinkansen services. From Ōmiya Station it is roughly a 1.5-2 km walk north (about 15-25 minutes) or a short 5-10 minute taxi ride; local Saitama Kōtsū buses also run from the station toward the shrine (check local timetables). By car the shrine is about 30-40 km north of central Tokyo (typically 40-60 minutes depending on traffic) via the Shuto Expressway/Route 17 or national routes into Saitama.

Tips for Visiting Hikawa Shrine #

Visit early on a weekday morning (before 9:00) to enjoy the shrine and its long tree-lined approach with far fewer visitors than at midday or during New Year's hatsumode rush.
Approach from Ōmiya Station (follow signs toward Ōmiya Park/Hikawa Shrine) - the main entrance and broad approach from the park give the best first view and easiest access.
Don't just photograph the outer grounds: spend a few minutes walking the inner precincts and ponds and look for the subsidiary shrines and large sacred trees that many passersby miss.
