How to Get to Higüey
Higüey (San Rafael de La Altagracia) is primarily accessed by road from Punta Cana Airport (PUJ), the nearest international gateway. Public minibuses and taxis provide onward connections across the region.
Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ): Higüey is usually reached via Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ), about 20-35 minutes by road depending on location. Airport taxis and transfers from PUJ to Higüey typically cost about 800-1,500 DOP (≈15-30 USD) and take roughly 25-40 minutes.
La Romana Airport (LRM) / Santo Domingo (SDQ): Alternatively some travellers arrive into La Romana (LRM) or Santo Domingo (SDQ) and continue by road; transfers from LRM take longer (≈1-1.5 hours) and from SDQ considerably longer.
Train: There is no passenger rail service serving Higüey.
Bus / Guagua / Coach: Public guaguas (shared minibuses) and intercity coaches run between Higüey and Punta Cana, Bávaro, La Romana and Santo Domingo. Local colectivos and moto-taxis serve short journeys inside the city; fares are low (often a few dozen pesos) but services are informal and schedules vary.
