Higashi Hongan-ji is a major Jodo Shinshu Buddhist temple complex in Kyoto that serves as the headquarters of the Higashi (Otani) branch. It dates its institutional founding to the early 17th century and comprises several large timber halls.

The complex contains extensive ceremonial halls and subsidiary buildings arranged across a spacious temple precinct. The main assembly halls are notable for their size and timber construction and are active sites for religious services, memorials and sect administration.

Established when the Hongan-ji institution was divided in the early 1600s, the Higashi branch developed its own headquarters and temple precinct in Kyoto. Buildings on the site have been rebuilt or restored periodically over the centuries as part of the temple’s continuous religious use.

Located in central Kyoto, the temple complex sits within the city’s historic urban fabric and is served by local transport links. It is one of several large temple complexes in Kyoto that attract both worshippers and visitors.

  • Sect headquarters: Headquarters of the Otani-ha branch of Jodo Shinshu, making it one of the principal institutional centers of that Buddhist school.
  • Visitor note: Large wooden halls are among the principal visitor sights; photography rules vary by interior space so follow on-site signage.

What to See #

  • Main halls: Goei-do (Founder's Hall) and Amida-do are the main ceremonial halls used for large congregational services and observances, each occupying extensive timber-built spaces.
  • Administrative complex: The temple complex includes administrative buildings and lecture halls that serve as the headquarters for the Higashi branch of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism.
