The Hidaka Mountains are a rugged mountain range in southeastern Hokkaido, Japan, forming a major spine of high peaks and steep ridges on the island. The range includes alpine terrain and several summits above 2,000 metres, the highest being Mount Poroshiri (2,052 m).

The range is the result of tectonic uplift and long-term erosion, producing sharp ridges and deep valleys typical of Hokkaido’s mountain geology. Over the 20th century parts of the range have been designated for conservation and recreational use.

The Hidaka Mountains run along southeastern Hokkaido, extending toward the Pacific coast; they lie well southeast of Sapporo and form a dominant natural feature of Hokkaido’s interior and coastal transition zone.

  • Seasonal access: Summer months are the main season for hiking and ridge traverses; many routes are alpine in character and require good fitness and route-finding skills.
  • Protected landscapes: The range contains protected areas and quasi-national parks that cover significant tracts of alpine and subalpine habitat, important for wildlife and river headwaters.
